Sudan Humanitarian Work Plan - 2012

Humanitarian need in Sudan is driven by conflict, displacement and vulnerability. In 2012, humanitarian assistance will support up to 4.2 million people to ensure food security,
access to basic services, shelter, and livelihoods opportunities. The humanitarian situation remains acute in Darfur, where up to 1.9 million people remain in camps for internally displaced persons, while at the same time a growing number of returnees require assistance. The outbreak of fighting and displacement
in the three Protocol Areas - Abyei, South Kordofan and Blue Nile - at the height of the agricultural season has placed local recovery and development activities on hold and created
significant new needs. Vulnerability among South Sudanese people returning to South Sudan, Sudanese people returning to Sudan from South Sudan, and in refugee populations in Eastern Sudan, are further reminders of the humanitarian challenges facing the country. Within these contexts, however, the needs of affected people are evolving. Increasingly, people are seeking assistance that provides opportunities for them to
move beyond emergency relief assistance and rebuild productive lives.

Sudan Weekly Humanitarian Bulletin - Issue No.48

Fighting between the SAF and the SPLM-N continues in South Kordofan State, particularly, along border areas between Sudan and South Sudan. On 3 December, heavy clashes were reported in the disputed border area Jaw/White Lake, about 90 km south of Kadugli, capital of South Kordofan, apparently resulting in casualties on both sides. According to UNHCR, these clashes did not reach the Yida refugee camp, located several kilometres away in South Sudan, but fear of possible attacks caused some refugees to flee south of the camp. Due to safety concerns, international NGOs have reportedly been relocated from Yida. UNHCR is increasing its efforts to relocate Sudanese refugees in Yida away from the border to safer sites in South Sudan. UNHCR estimates that altogether some 20,000 refugees from South Kordofan have arrived in South Sudan.

	Sudan Humanitarian Update - Q3 - 2011

The secession of South Sudan took place peacefully on 9 July. Nevertheless, outstanding issues related to the secession continued to fuel tensions in Sudan throughout the 3rd Quarter of 2011. The status of Abyei and border demarcation as well as sharing of oil wealth remained unresolved and contributed
to the deterioration of the situation with signifi cant humanitarian
consequences. Ongoing fi ghting in South Kordofan
between Government forces and forces of the Sudan People’s
Liberation Movement - North (SPLM-N) spread in September
to Blue Nile State where thousands fl ed their homes. Access
to these areas by international organizations has been severely
restricted by the Government, greatly limiting their ability to
assist those in need.
